Pharmacology

Enaphrin (Xylometazoline HCl) is a sympathomimetic agent. It is a vasoconstrictor with rapid prolonged action.

Indications

Relief of nasal congestion caused by rhinitis, sinusitis, catarrh and hayfever.

Contra-indications

In patients who are sensitive to Xylometazoline or any other components in the formulation.

Precautions/Warnings

Enaphrin should be used with great caution in patients who may be hypersensitive to sympathomimetic agents. Care should also be taken in patients with cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus.

Prolonged use may produce rebound congestion and rhinorrhoea. Limit use to 3-5 days, maximum 7 days.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. Tell your healthcare professional if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medicine.

Interactions with Foods/Tobacco/Alcohol

Certain medicines should not be used at or around the time of eating food or eating certain types of food since interactions may occur. Using alcohol or tobacco with certain medicines may also cause interactions to occur. Discuss with your healthcare professional the use of your medicine with food, alcohol, or tobacco.

Adverse Effects

Transient local irritation may occur. Nausea and headache too may occur, and dryness of the nasal mucosa.

Dosage & Administration

Adult:

Apply 3-4 drops topically as nasal drop into each nostril two or three times daily.

Children 12 years and below:

Apply topically as nasal drop into each nostril once or twice daily.

Not recommended for infants of less than 3 months of age.

Storage/Handling Recommendations

Should be protected from light.

Keep in a cool dry place and away from children.
