Pharmacology

Amoxicillin is similar to ampicillin in its bactericidal action against susceptible organisms during the stage of active multiplication. It acts through the inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall mucopeptide. Amoxicillin has been shown to be active against most strains of the following microorganisms, both in vitro and in clinical infections.

Amoxycillin is a broad spectrum antibiotic which exerts a bactericidal action against a wide variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial pathogens including Streptococci, Pneumcocci, non-penicillinase producing Staphylococci, N. gonorrhoea, H. Influenzae, E. coli, Proteus mirabilis and other susceptible organisms. Amoxycillin is stable in the presence of gastric acid and well absorbed from the GIT.

Indications

Respiratory tract infections; ENT infections; Otitis media; Acute and Chronic bronchitis, Lobar and Broncho-pneumonia; Gynaecological infections including puerperal sepsis and septic abortion; Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Peritonitis, Meningitis, Intra-abdominal sepsis, Septicaemia, Bacteria endocarditis, typhoid and parathyphoid fever, Skin and Soft tissue infections, Enteric fever, Dental prophylaxis and Osteomyelitis.

Therapy may be instituted prior to obtaining results from bacteriological and susceptibility tests to Amoxycillin.

Contra-indications

Hypersensitivity to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics.

Precautions/Warnings

Amoxycillin may cause reactions typical of penicillin allergy, especially in sensitive patients. In case of any allergic reactions, the drug should be discontinued and the patient is to be treated with the usual agents like antihistamines, pressor amines, and/or corticosteroids.

Interactions

Major interaction is with Methotrexate. So consult your healthcare practitioner if you are using other drugs.

Adverse Effects

Diarrhoea, indigestion, or occasionally rash, either urticarial, which suggests penicillin hypersensitivity, or erythematous rash which may be caused in patients with glandular fever, in which case it is advisable to discontinue the therapy.
